Overview
The weather in Sri Lanka’s is rather complicated for such a small country. This is due to the fact that the island is affected by two separate monsoons, the presence of which will play a factor in deciding when to go to. On the bright side, this means that there is usually good weather somewhere on the island at most times of the year.
When thinking about the best time to visit Sri Lanka, it’s worth bearing in mind that the basic pattern for weather in Sri Lanka as described below can vary significantly from year to year. It’s also a fact that global warming has disrupted these already complex weather patterns.
Program Highlights
Unsurprisingly, the rainfall pattern will be one of the most important factors in your decision of when to go to Sri Lanka.
The main southwest (“Yala”) monsoon brings rain to the west and southwest coasts and hill country from April/May to September (wettest from April to June).
The less severe northeast (“Maha”) monsoon hits the east coast from November to March (wettest from November to December).
There’s also a inter-monsoonal period of unsettled weather preceding the Maha monsoon in October and November. During this time heavy rainfall and thunderstorms can occur anywhere across the island.
Trip Highlights
The country’s position close to the Equator means that at least one aspect of the weather in Sri Lanka, the temperature, remains fairly constant year-round. Coastal and lowland areas enjoy average daytime temperatures of around 26–30°C. During the hottest part of the day, they can often climb up well into the 30°Cs. Temperatures decrease with altitude, reducing to a temperate 18–22°C in Kandy. In Nuwara Eliya and the highest parts of the island, on average it’s a pleasantly mild 14–17°C. Nights in the hills can be quite chilly, with temperatures sometimes falling close to freezing. Humidity is often another high everywhere. It can rise to a sweltering 90% at times in the southwest, and averages 60 to 80% across the rest of the island.
In practical terms, these weather patterns mean that that when to go to Sri Lanka depends on your route. If you’re heading to the west and south coasts and hill country, December to March is the best time to visit Sri Lanka. If you plan on seeing the east coast, you’ll get the best weather from April/May to September.

Day 1Arrival Colombo and Transfer to Hotel
Welcome to the commercial capital and largest city of Srilanka. Colombo is the financial center of the island and a popular tourist destination. Meet and greet by our representative and transfer to your pre booked hotel. Overnight at hotel.
Colombo, Sri Lanka’s capital, its biggest city and port. The cosmopolitan face of the country, it is also the financial and commercial capital of the country. Walk through its streets and the colonial buildings speak of a time bygone. But then walk into the next street, and the latest brand stores, apartments, and snazziest cars catch your eye, indicating the coming together of two different eras, the rise of a nation.
Day 2Transfer Bentota | The full day tour
After breakfast proceed to Bentota. Relax in the beach. Overnight stay at Bentota. Bentota – situated on the south west coast, at the confluence of the sea and the Bentota river, the sun drenched location and its golden, palm-fringed beaches which border the warm, sparkling waters of the Indian Ocean made it a natural choice for development as the first tourist resort.
Today it is known in Sri Lanka’s global tourist markets as a highly attractive holiday resort with a wide and varied choice of distinctive hotels to suit every taste and purse. Bentota has a complete range of tourist facilities, great seafood and very popular water sports centres which provide boating, water skiing, jet skiing, snorkelling and wind surfing.
Day 3Visit Galle Fort | The full day tour
After breakfast visit Galle Fort, Turtle hatchery and later Boat Ride on Madhu River. Overnight stay at Galle Galle – It was once the chief port of Ceylon as Sri Lanka was named by the British. It is still well known for hand-made lace, tortoise shell curios and ebony elephants. You can also visit the Galle fort (spanning 90 acres), which was originally built by the Portuguese and later extended by the Dutch in 1663.
This is a world heritage site. Madu River -which flows across Balapitiya (approx 80kms down south from Colombo) is one of the rarely visited and unspoiled attractions any nature lover can find in Sri Lanka.
Day 4Transfer to Colombo| Colombo City Tour
Breakfast and transfer to Colombo for City tour. Overnight Colombo Colombo – like many capital cities in developing countries Colombo is fast changing its face. almost overnight, skyscrapers arise from where old buildings once stood, yet in some parts, the old world charm is retained. A 100-year-old clock tower and several British built, colonial buildings are still to be seen in the city.
The Pettah bazaar – where one can shop for bargains, a Hindu and a Buddhist temple, residential areas where you find the stately homes of the affluent, the Colombo museum, the Bandaranaike memorial international conference hall – an outright gift to Sri Lanka from the people’s republic of china, the new parliament in Sri Jayawardenapura and the folk art center are some of the places of interest that one can visit to.
Day 5Back home with sweet memory
After enjoying breakfast, check-out of your hotel in the afternoon and proceed to the airport to board your return flight. Our representative will be right at hotel lobby for departure back to airport.
